Week 24- Letter U
Letter U Week
Language Arts and Reading:
The both really wanted to use watercolor paints (with water in a bowl according to Hannah). Ethan managed to cover his U picture almost entirely in a grey sopping mess and Hannah attempted to use as many colors as possible.
Making the letter U.
This week we read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See? by Eric Carle. This brings me back to my days teaching in Korea. This was always a class favorite. I even used it as for the speech competition one year because it is so easy to memorize. As I type this, I have flown back in my memory to Korea and it occurs to me that Ethan is now as old as some of my youngest students. My own kids didn't disappoint and loved it too. We've read it many times before and they always enjoy it.
Math:
The last couple of weeks we have been learning about circles, squares, rectangles and triangles. Well this week we looked at geometric figures and how they related to our previously learned shapes.
Then they played with the solids with bowls of water. Hannah did lots of filling, measuring, and pouring. Ethan did a lot of drinking!
Nature/Science:
We did a walking water experiment that was easy and a lot of fun. We put purple water in the higher glass with a paper towel strip draped from the higher glass to the lower empty glass. The colored water is absorbed by the paper towel and is sucked up and then "walks" to the other glass. I drew the line because Hannah and Ethan were having a hard time actually noticing that the water was moving, they needed something for the water to reach.
Hannah and Ethan checked on our experiment often to see how much water was in the lower glass.
Art:
Hannah and Ethan made an umbrella mobile. We used to half circles that they each decorated with the dot markers.
Later after it dried, we put it all together.
Hannah gazing up.
Just for Fun:
Hannah and Ethan threw balls into an upside down umbrella.
Cheering for a shot made!!
Ethan sorted bears by color, and Hannah sorted bears by size.
Matching umbrella puzzles.(from COAH)
This was leftover from last year. The both thought it was still fun.

Palm Sunday
Yesterday was Palm Sunday and I thought several times that we should be celebrating Hannah's birthday. You see Hannah was born on Palm Sunday and even though her birthday date doesn't change the day we celebrate Palm Sunday changes every year along with Easter. We will have to have an extra special birthday when her birth date and Palm Sunday line up.
My Palm Sunday baby.
We had fun yesterday putting together our Easter garden. As we did last year our Easter garden has 3 crosses (Jesus death on the cross), the tomb (His burial and Resurrection , candles (He is the light of the world), a path of rocks to the cross (representing the journey to the cross), as well as the sprouts we planted to represent new life.
This is a very simple but tangible activity for Hannah and Ethan to "see" and "touch" the events that lead up to Jesus dying on the cross and the burial in the tomb and the resurrection to life.
While the sprouts have not started growing yet, they should up by Sunday.
Here is the links to the garden we made last year, and the year before that:
We talked about Jesus and his triumphant entry into Jerusalem and made some palm branches. Andrew read one of our story books that covers all the events of Holy week.
I am aware that our "palm branches" look nothing like the real thing, but my smallest critics loved them.
Here is a quick look into what they did with them:

Ethan-isms #1
Ethan-isms
Daddy's in his office. He's at work. He works on his computer at Auntie Joan's Church. Then he will come home. Daddy is at work a long time. (I agree)
Is daddy in jail? (No Honey he is not, he's just at work).
You don't eat poop. It's yucky. You will throw up? (followed by barfing noises)
I will not pee on you, on the bed, or the floor.
(Just after he turned 2, Andrew was changing Ethan on the floor when he started peeing all over Andrew. He had not done this since he was an infant. Needless to say, we were shocked but Ethan a little traumatized hehehehe. He feels the need every so often to remind us that he knows not to pee on anything).

Art by Hannah
Hannah was been drawing up a storm lately and I thought it might be fun to share some of her creations. I threw a few of her pictures out the other day and she found them in the trash can (you cannot keep everything). She came to me so sweetly and said "Mommy, I found these in the garbage it must have been a mistake right?" followed by " Are you happy I found them for you?". Break my heart. So I scanned a few for keeps.
This is a square man with rainbow hair. He has lots of arms and legs.
At the top she wrote "dad" and "Mmeee" (Mommy).
This is a picture of Ethan, Hannah, and I while daddy is at work. I love how bleary eyed Hannah looks, and how slightly maniacal I look as I peer at her through my left eye.
This is a picture of a fish (bottom) and Hannah wearing a back pack.
Heart
I'm not sure what this is, but what I like the layer upon layer of paper and glue she used. Each piece added one after the other.
These are paper people that Hannah made (and also an absolute favorite of Andrew and me). She made one for each member of the family.
This is is a picture of two butterflies chasing each other. The mommy butterfly is the large pink triangle in the center and the baby butterfly is the pink thing under the H.

Week 22/23- Letter T
Week 22/23- Letter T
Language Arts and Reading:
Each week (most weeks), I change out the poster on the fridge with the poster with the letter we are currently on. In never ceases to amaze me how excited Hannah and Ethan are to discover the next poster.
Our T activity page had Ethan and Hannah making fingerprint flies for the toad.
I don't know what to say about this picture other than I love her.
Art:
Hannah and Ethan made masking tape paintings.
In the first picture, they are putting on the tape pieces. Then using water colors they painted until their boards we covered.
Hannah loved to be very deliberate with her colors. But the best part was taking off the tape.
All done! They are pretty proud of their masterpieces. I think they turned out great.
Math:
Triangles
We looked at different types of triangles.
Then using our velcro popsicle sticks they made their own triangles.
Hannah was very excited to discover that she could make a diamond with two of the triangles.
Lastly, they made a triangle collage from the triangles they collected around the house on a triangle hunt.
Faith Formation:
This week we finished up the section we have been working on the last couple of weeks on appreciating the senses God has given us. This final week was on taste.
We did a couple of different things, explored the different tastes (sweet, sour, salty etc).
I love this picture of Hannah tasting the lemon juice.
Learned how to make apple sauce. Then tasted apple sauce with and without cinnamon to decide which is better; cinnamon won.
And of course we did a flannel board story. Their absolute favorite part.
Nature:
This didn't go as planned and so I improvised. I wanted to got for a walk and do tree bark rubbings outside. But it was too wet all week. I finally decided to bring some wood inside and do it that way.
Just for Fun:
Matching triangles.
Tea Party
A table for three.
Hannah and Ethan couldn't believe I let them each have their own cup (real) with tea. The both like tea and often hound me when I have my own.
Ethan was quite concerned that I might serve him tea that was too hot. Hannah said we needed to have a tea party again. They were very careful and did a great job not spilling the tea.
